can you add a hard drive to the Xbox 360 slim 4gb?

i am thinking of getting a xbox 360 but i dont want to spend alot of money so i thought of getting the 4gb slim. but a friend said 4gb wouldnt be enough and said buy a hard drive. but another friend said i can only get a 60gb hard drive! and i should buy the 120gb elite.
help??

you can buy a 250g hardrive for the 4gb ones if you want more space later on, you can also use a usb memory stick to store saves on, my partner does that on my xbox
