Do I need a subscription to buy games off Xbox Arcade?

I’m getting a new Xbox 360, and I know it comes with some sort of free trial for Live, so I want to use it and buy a game off the Arcade.

Every person with an Xbox 360 has at least a Silver membership.
You do not need to buy a Gold membership to buy games, or movies, or extra content.

if you buy a Gold Membership you don’t lose anything.

Gold Membership only lets you play games online against or with others.
